Hardin House is in Austin, TX, just a few blocks from the University of Texas at Austin’s west campus. The area is vibrant and home to many sororities and student apartment complexes.

What is the Hardin House History
Hardin House has a rich history starting in 1937 when Stella Davis Hardin opened her home to student boarders. Mrs Hardin was the original housemother and had strict rules for the young ladies living in her care. Hardin House remained family-owned for generations and steadily grew to include its six residence halls.
The heart and soul of Hardin House is the legacy of daughters following their mothers’ footsteps, young women bonding in sisterhood, and the formation of friendships that span a lifetime. There is spirit and joy among the Hardin House community, and once “A Hardin Girl” always “A Hardin Girl”.
In 2024 Hardin House was purchased by McCombs Enterprises. Founder Red McCombs has a long history with the University of Texas at Austin and the McCombs family includes several Hardin House alumni.
Who are the Staff at Hardin House?
Hardin House has a full-time and dedicated team to support residents, including house-mothers, front office team, security, cooks, maintenance staff, and housekeepers.
The Director of Residents is Pansy Flick and the property is professionally managed by PeakMade.
Is Parking Available?
Yes, parking is available. Students with cars can get an assigned parking space per semester for an additional fee.
Parking spaces are located along the perimeter of the property or in the garage across the street. Spaces are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Are Guests Allowed?
Female guests are allowed to stay overnight with advanced confirmation (including a consent and release) and a daily fee to cover meals. There are not, however, any extra beds. Overnight guests need to be accommodated with existing furnishings.
Who Can Live at Hardin House?
Hardin House is exclusively for women attending college or university in Austin, TX.
Do You Have to Attend The University of Texas at Austin to Live at Hardin House?
No. While most residents do attend The University of Texas, Hardin House welcomes female students attending any Austin area college or university.
Why Apply Early?
Application to live at Hardin House starts by registering your interest.
We encourage early registration because .the earlier you register, the higher your place ‘in line’ is for house and room selections.
Some Hardin House alumni register their daughters before grade school! But don’t worry, most registrations take place during a young woman’s high school years.
When Do Applicants Have to Commit to a Hardin House Contract?
Application to live at Hardin House is a two-step process.
Step 1 is registering your interest to live at Hardin House. Note, registering does not obligate you to any contracts.
Step 2 takes place during January of a young lady’s senior year in high school. At this time Hardin House invites all of the young ladies on the registration list to formally apply and commit to a housing contract for the coming academic year.
What Happens if I Sign a Contract and My Daughter Decides Not to Come to Austin?
We understand that sometimes plans change. While our housing contracts are binding, they do include provisions for cancelation. The terms and conditions for financial liability and cancelation are detailed in the housing contract.
What are the Different Houses and Room Types at Hardin House?
Hardin House includes six residence halls on its mini campus: Red House, Red Annex, Main House, Green House, Grant House, and The Apartments.
As each house is unique, so are the rooms and suites. Some have soaring ceiling while others boast walk-in closets or sitting rooms. There are single rooms, doubles and triples, many with private baths.
Detailed information on the houses and room types will be included in your contract packet. We also encourage applicants to come tour Hardin House to get a sense of the houses and room options.
When Are House, Room, and Roommate Choices Made?
House, room, and roommate requests are all part of the housing contract. Final determinations are made in the Spring of a student’s senior year in high school.
Is a Roommate Choice Necessary?
You may request a roommate, but it is not necessary. Many of our residents allow Hardin House leadership to match roommates based upon information given in the contracting process.
There are also a series of single rooms available.
For Parents
What makes Hardin House so unique is that it is exclusively for freshman women and provides a secure, nurturing environment for them to thrive.
The mini-campus includes two house-mothers, front door/desk security, 24/7 monitoring, meal plan, 24/7 Snack Bar, kitchens, laundry service, housekeeping, parking (limited) , and a range of comfortable amenities.
Aside from the front reception common rooms and the dining hall, men and boys are not allowed inside Hardin House (except during move in/out days).
Perhaps most important, Hardin House is a wonderful step away from home yet with a support team in place and a sisterhood of like-minded young women with whom to share experiences and build lifelong friendships.
What is Security Like at Hardin House?
Security is taken very seriously at Hardin House.
- Staff is on-site 24/7 during the academic year.
- All entries to the buildings are monitored 24/7.
- Entry doors are always locked. Residents have secure entry codes while visitors can only be admitted by front desk staff.
